Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic Therapy is a gravity-reduced exercise for medical conditions such as joint replacement, arthritis, fibromyalgia and following surgery. The buoyancy, support, and accommodating resistance of water enhance exercise and create a safe environment for progressive rehabilitation. The temperature of the water is kept at a comfortable 94 degrees. Our pool has multiple levels of depths up to 4-1/2; feet with whirlpool jets as well as an underwater treadmill, which allows early and progressive rehabilitative exercises. Supervised water exercises are performed in the water therapy pool. There are multiple exercises and techniques that we can perform within the therapy pool. Aqua therapy is excellent for total body reconditioning.

Spinal Decompression

Eliminate Back and Neck Pain

Relieve Pain, Save Money and Possibly Avoid Surgery

Are you suffering from?

  • Back Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Herniated, ruptured, protruding or bulging discs
  • Spinal Stenosis (narrowing)
  • Sciatica
  • Radiculopathy (pinched nerves)
  • Facet Syndrome
  • Failed Back Surgery Syndrome
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Pain after surgery

Spinal Decompression can help! Spinal Decompression therapy is a non-surgical treatment for chronic back and neck pain caused by degenerative disc disease, herniated disc or other deformities of the disc. Spinal Decompression is an effective and safe treatment involving minimal cost and minimal time.

  • Dizziness
  • Imbalance or disequilibrium
  • Falls
  • Vestibular Neuritis
  • Peripheral Vestibular Dysfunction
  • Acoustic Neuroma
  • Central Vestibular Dysfunction
  • Bilateral and unilateral vestibular loss
  • Balance disorders caused by other conditions
  • Head trauma

Services provided:

  • Complete history regarding symptoms
  • Oculomotor exam (eye movements)
  • Balance assessment
  • Muscle strength, range of motion, coordination and sensation
  • Gait assessment
  • Balance retraining exercises
  • Specific vestibular exercises
  • Supervised therapy sessions to monitor progress and continually challenge the vestibular, visual and balance systems
  • Repositioning (Epley's) maneuver for BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
  • A home program of individualized vestibular exercises

We use the latest technology available including the Biodex SD and infrared goggles. We also utilize evidence-based treatments that are individualized based on patients' symptoms and evaluation findings.

Fall Risk Assessment and Prevention

We have an innovative, life-saving program for older adults to combat falls. Our Fall Risk Assessment and Prevention program determines who is at risk of falling by identifying "risk factors" through a series of tests. Our physical therapist will then create a physical therapy program, including an exercise regimen, to help the patient regain balance and reduce their risk of falling.

Services provided:

  • Balance Testing and Training using the Biodex SD
  • Lower Extremity strengthening exercises
  • Gait and Endurance Exercises

Balance and Proprioception Testing and Training

Our system combines sensors under a platform to detect patient weight distribution and response to computer challenges. Their efforts are displayed on a large eye-level screen and captured on a computer, which also stores the performance of normal individuals at different ages performing the same tests. We can quickly test a patient's postural stability on firm and unstable surfaces to identify underlying visual and musculoskeletal deficiencies and perform a two-minute fall risk test that compares patient balance to a database of age-matched "normals".

Biodex Balance System
All of these tests are performed on the Biodex Balance System, which consists of a computerized platform and touch-screen control panel that measures a patient's ability to maintain balance. Results are displayed on a large color screen for instant biofeedback as well as printed for "tracking" the patient's progress throughout their assessment and training phases. The system compares the patient's results to stored averages of other healthy adults in their age and gender category or to previous tests. From these calculations a "risk factor" can be determined, which allows our physical therapist to assess the patient's risk of falling, and suggest a plan of action. These tests are covered by most health insurance plans.

Functional Capacity Evaluation

Our Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an intense one-day evaluation that focuses on the individual's maximum physical abilities. This is accomplished by utilizing a variety of objective tests in conjunction with the therapist's observation and interpretive skills. The individual is referred to us for the FCE, and our professional staff provides the testing. Our physical and occupational therapists have specific training and experience in biomechanics, ergonomics and task analysis. Physical abilities related to musculoskeletal strength, endurance, speed and flexibility can be determined. The types of tests used will vary with objective of evaluation and referral question.

An FCE is appropriate when:

  • The patient is nearing the end of therapy.
  • There is a question as to whether an injured patient can return to a previous job.
  • There is a request to determine any work restrictions.
  • The injured worker's abilities are questionable.
  • The patient is not a therapy candidate, is returning to work, but needs restrictions.
  • There is a need to determine if further treatment is warranted.

Impairment Rating

Impairment rating is a medical evaluation performed by a physician using the American Medical Association's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. The Guides is used to assess the individual's medical condition and its effect on function. The evaluation will estimate the degree to which the impairment decreases the individual's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL).
