Our system combines sensors under a platform to detect patient weight distribution and response to computer challenges. Their efforts are displayed on a large eye-level screen and captured on a computer, which also stores the performance of normal individuals at different ages performing the same tests. We can quickly test a patient's postural stability on firm and unstable surfaces to identify underlying visual and musculoskeletal deficiencies and perform a two-minute fall risk test that compares patient balance to a database of age-matched "normals".
Biodex Balance System
All of these tests are performed on the Biodex Balance System, which consists of a computerized platform and touch-screen control panel that measures a patient's ability to maintain balance. Results are displayed on a large color screen for instant biofeedback as well as printed for "tracking" the patient's progress throughout their assessment and training phases. The system compares the patient's results to stored averages of other healthy adults in their age and gender category or to previous tests. From these calculations a "risk factor" can be determined, which allows our physical therapist to assess the patient's risk of falling, and suggest a plan of action. These tests are covered by most health insurance plans.
